Riga Futsal Club completed their UEFA Futsal Champions League group stage campaign today with a 2-0 victory over Serbian champions Loznica-Grad, securing a place in the Round of 16.
Heading into the match, the Latvian champions needed at least a draw after having started the tournament with a victory over hosts Luxol St. Andrews (Malta) and a 1-6 defeat to European giants Benfica two days ago. Their opponents, Loznica-Grad, had collected just one point from their first two matches, drawing with the Maltese side.
In this decisive clash, Riga dominated both possession and scoring chances, yet couldn’t find a breakthrough before halftime, as the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.
The pressure finally paid off in the 31st minute, when Brazilian Fradick Goes opened the scoring. Just a few minutes later, team captain and top scorer Dylan Vargas doubled the lead – his third goal in three matches – sealing the win and Riga’s progression to the knockout phase.
With this result, Riga Futsal Club finish second in their group and advance to the Round of 16. The first leg of the next stage will be played on 24 November, with the return match scheduled for 5 December. The draw to determine Riga’s opponents will take place next Thursday.
