FK Tauras have underlined their ambition to return to Lithuania’s top division with the signing of experienced striker Serge Nyuiadzi. The Togolese striker, 33, joins the Tauragė side as they battle to close the gap on Pirma Lyga leaders TransINVEST and revive the club’s long-dormant A Lyga ambitions.
Tauras currently sit second in the second tier with 48 points from 21 matches, seven behind league leaders TransINVEST. With the Pirma Lyga title race entering its decisive stage, the addition of a proven goalscorer with both international and domestic pedigree is a significant boost.
Nyuiadzi is a familiar name in Lithuanian football. He won three consecutive A Lyga titles with FK Žalgiris in 2013, 2014 and 2015, later also playing for Marijampolė Sūduva. Earlier in his career he featured in France’s Ligue 1 with OGC Nice, before establishing himself in the Baltic region. His arrival in Tauragė adds both experience and firepower to a side looking to take the final step back to the top flight.
According to our sources, this move will make Nyuiadzi one of the highest paid players in Pirma Lyga.
For Tauras, the push for promotion caps a remarkable turnaround from years of instability. Registered in its current form in 2007, the club has endured a turbulent decade: finishing 17th in the 2015 Pirma Lyga season, withdrawing from competitions in 2016, and again ceasing sporting activity in 2018 and 2019 as debts mounted. By 2020, the situation was so bleak that the club relied on open invitations to assemble a team for the II Lyga. A year later, financial problems forced Tauras into the III Lyga, sparking open discussion about whether the historic club would collapse altogether.
Instead, Tauras slowly rebuilt. They re-entered the II Lyga in 2022, re-established structure, and climbed back into the Pirma Lyga. Now, with the club once again challenging for honours, there is renewed optimism that the former A Lyga participants can restore their place at the highest level.
The arrival of Nyuiadzi is the clearest signal yet of that intent. A three-time Lithuanian champion with international and European experience, he will be expected to bring cutting edge and leadership to a team chasing down TransINVEST in the promotion race.
After years of setbacks, FK Tauras now have both momentum on the pitch and the ambition off it. With a proven champion now in their ranks, the club and its supporters can start to believe that top-flight football may be returning to Tauragė.
