Wednesday evening, Vilnius’ FK Žalgiris will begin their UEFA Champions League qualifying journey, facing Maltese champions Hamrun Spartans in the first leg of the opening round in the Lithuanian capital. Ahead of the match, head coach Vladimir Cheburin and team captain Ovidijus Verbickas spoke at a press conference about the team’s preparation, emotional state, and the significance of this European stage for the club.
Prepared with Multiple Game Plans and Focused Mindset
Žalgiris head into the clash already in competitive rhythm, while Hamrun Spartans are just starting their season. Cheburin noted this as a key difference and elaborated on the team’s approach.
“What separates us is that they’re only beginning their season,” said Cheburin. “Each team prepares according to its own analysis and needs. Our opponents have made significant squad rotations. We are ready. Everyone is fit except for those with more serious injuries. We’ve prepared several game plans and will decide on the field which to use.”
Despite the importance of the match, Cheburin said the team feels no extra pressure. “I don’t think two matches can define an entire season. We have more games ahead. We’re ready to go far. We’re stepping onto the pitch with a winning mindset, so there’s no pressure—just focus.”
Home Advantage a Key Factor
Captain Ovidijus Verbickas expressed satisfaction that the first leg will be played at home. “We’ve waited a long time for this—it’s a celebration. Playing at home first is very important. The opening match can determine how the rest of the tie plays out. We’ll give everything we’ve got to keep this celebration going.”
Speaking about conditions in the return leg and the importance of the result, Verbickas emphasized momentum.
“I don’t know how much the weather will affect us, but getting a strong result in the first game would be a major boost. We’re giving it everything to bring that result with us.”
Strength Through Adversity and Antal’s Return
Verbickas acknowledged that the beginning of the season was tough but said the team grew stronger because of it.
“It’s been a difficult phase, but challenges brought us closer together. We supported each other through it all. The fans helped a lot—thank you to them. Now, the players really understand what it means to be part of Žalgiris.”
He also highlighted the character shown in their recent A Lyga match against Banga, where they played with ten men.
“Those kinds of matches build character. We’re ready—mentally and emotionally—for what’s coming. I believe we’ll get a positive result.”
Asked about Liviu Antal’s return, Verbickas said the forward brings more than just talent. “Žalgiris is more than a club to Liviu—it’s a second home. He brings energy and character, something we were missing earlier this season. He’s given us a lot already. I believe he came back at just the right moment—we’re still in the race in A Lyga and ready to fight.”
Cheburin also addressed the injury situation, naming one player close to returning. “We’re waiting for our injured players to recover. Younnas Zahary is the closest to returning. We hope he’ll be ready later this month.”
The first leg between FK Žalgiris and Hamrun Spartans will take place on tommorow at 7:00 PM in Vilnius. The game will be broadcasted live on Delfi.lt.
