FK Liepāja have announced the signing of Latvian national team midfielder Aleksejs Saveļjevs, marking his return to the Virslīga after a brief stint abroad. The 26-year-old central midfielder rejoins the Latvian top flight following six months in Romania with Liga I side FC Buzău.
Saveļjevs joined Buzău in January and featured in 11 league matches, registering one assist. However, following the club’s relegation from Romania’s top division, it became evident that the Latvian midfielder would be seeking a new challenge.
That new chapter brings him back to Latvia, where he previously spent three seasons with FK Auda. During his time with the club, Saveļjevs made 106 appearances and scored eight goals, becoming a key figure in their midfield. A product of the Skonto Academy, he made the move abroad at just 18, joining the youth setup of Italian club Hellas Verona.
His career in Italy also included two seasons in Serie C, where he played for Rende and Mantova. Saveļjevs returned to Latvia in the summer of 2021, signing with Riga FC and appearing in nine matches before moving on to FK Auda.
Internationally, Saveļjevs is a regular feature in the Latvian national team, having earned 29 caps and scored once — a memorable goal against Germany, with none other than Manuel Neuer in goal.
FK Liepāja currently sit third in the Virslīga table after 21 rounds, and the addition of Saveļjevs is seen as a significant boost to their midfield as they aim to strengthen their position in the title race.
