The summer transfer window has officially opened in the Latvian Virslīga, and FK Grobiņa has wasted no time in making headlines by announcing their first new signing. The club has secured the services of former Latvian national team midfielder Aleksejs Grjaznovs, who joins on a permanent deal.
The 27-year-old spent the previous season abroad, competing in Serbia’s second division, where he represented two clubs: Mladost GAT and Dubočica. Over the course of the campaign, Grjaznovs featured in 23 matches and registered one assist.
Grjaznovs brings a wealth of experience from Latvian football, having previously played for a number of domestic sides including RTU FC/Skonto Academy, FC RFS, Valmiera FC, FK Jelgava, Jūrmalas Noah, FK Liepāja, and SK Super Nova. His international career has taken him to the Czech Republic’s lower leagues and the Armenian Premier League with FC Noah.
His lone appearance for the Latvian national team came on November 19, 2019, when he played the full 90 minutes in a historic 1–0 victory over Austria—still his only cap for the senior squad.
Currently, Grobiņa sits seventh in the Virslīga table with 19 points from 19 matches. Grjaznovs could make his debut as early as tomorrow, as Grobiņa heads to eastern Latvia for a crucial away clash against BFC Daugavpils.
