The Lithuanian women’s national team kicked off its new UEFA Women’s Nations League cycle on Tuesday, facing a challenging match in Division C against the Montenegro WNT. Under the guidance of new coach Tomas Ražanauskas, Lithuania suffered a 1-3 defeat in Podgorica.

In his debut as WNT manager, Ražanauskas selected a starting eleven that included eight players from the Lithuanian league, along with one player each from Italy, Poland, and Switzerland. This matchup marked the first encounter between Lithuania and Montenegro since 2013, when the teams played to a draw.

The match in Podgorica began with a difficult start for the Lithuanian side, as Montenegro struck first just two minutes in. However, as the game progressed, Lithuania grew more confident, creating scoring opportunities, including a notable shot from Rimantė Jonušaitė that was saved.

Lithuania equalized when Gintra player Marija Galkina reacted quickly to a rebound from a set-piece, finding the net from close range. Unfortunately, the Montenegrin team responded quickly, scoring a second goal before halftime, leaving the score at 2-1 in their favor as the teams headed to the break.

The second half presented further challenges for Ražanauskas’ squad as Armisa Kuc, a forward for Montenegro, extended their lead by completing a hat trick. Despite their efforts, Lithuania could not find the back of the net again.

With no additional goals in the remaining minutes, Lithuania began their campaign with a defeat. The team’s next match will be on April 4, when they host the Azerbaijan WNT in Vilnius. The match is set to start at 18:30 p.m.
